Richard „Dick“ Seaman, born 1913, was one of the most talented British racing drivers of the pre-war era.
This did not go unnoticed by the House of Daimler-Benz either, and Alfred Neubauer, then Mercedes' race director, signed Dick Seaman as a works driver in 1937. Seaman thus joined the crew as a fourth driver alongside regular drivers Caracciola, von Brauchitsch and Lang.
24 July 1938 was, quite literally, set to become a shining hour for Dick Seaman. On that day, the German Grand Prix was held at the Nürburgring in front of around 350,000 spectators. Dick Seaman won this highly dramatic race in a Mercedes-Benz W154 with start number 16 and a green-painted radiator grille as the far-visible hallmark of his car.
Dick Seaman could be proud of this success, which he had more than earned through driving skill and his level-headed manner.
Barely a year later, in 1939 at the race in Spa, fate caught up with the popular young racing driver. Holding a commanding lead in pouring rain, he suffered an accident that proved fatal.
