Alfa Romeo 8C 2300

Many consider the 2.3-litre Alfa 8C, from which this example is derived, to be the finest racing car of the early 1930s. Also known as the "Monza" – a nickname given to the shortened two-seater Grand Prix 8Cs after an early model emerged victorious from the 1931 Italian Grand Prix – this Italian straight-eight monster embodies the spirit of motor racing in that glamorous era. Enzo Ferrari described Tazio Nuvolari as "the greatest he had ever seen", and this beautiful 1:8 scale model in the ZÜRIRING Motodrom shows the car with start number 28, with which Nuvolari won the 1932 Monaco Grand Prix. That year, the 8C dominated the season with wins at the French and German Grands Prix, to name just a few. The 8C stood out for its outstanding power-to-weight ratio, and the 1932 variant undoubtedly benefited from an enlarged version of the engine, displacing 2665 cm³ and driven not by one but by two superchargers. In 1933 Alfa Romeo withdrew from motor racing, but a whole host of successful private drivers carried the 8C forward. The 8C's dominance meant it continued to perform well on the racetrack into the middle of the decade, and its undisputed character and style made it an icon of its time.
