70s Concept Cars – Rainer W. Schlegelmilch

Repackaged, publication date 2012, 216 pages, D/E/F

Italy's most innovative design houses, from Bertone to Pininfarina, pursued a radical approach in the late 1960s and, above all, in the 1970s: with their wedge-shaped creations, they wanted nothing less than to reinvent the car. Some of their ideas – embodied in the concept cars gathered here – have ended up on the scrapheap of design history, while others still have an impact today. Rainer W. Schlegelmilch, known above all for his spectacular Formula 1 photography, had all these exhibits in front of his lens, and in his artful compositions their angular silhouettes meet the curvaceous forms of models draped against them. In this dual sense, his images of yesterday's dreams of the future are true to the spirit of the seventies – and that is precisely what makes them so fascinating today.
