Lancia cars have always been known for their innovations, particularly in motorsport models. The Formula 1 thoroughbred was no exception to this tradition.
Would you like to get to know the inner workings of a CMC model? We're happy to help – we've removed the bodywork. This has created a so-called „Rolling Chassis“, which gives you a detailed view of the intricately structured tubular spaceframe, along with in-depth insights into the layout of the suspension and the drivetrain, complete with engine and the transaxle mounted at the rear axle.
You can now also study the engine in every detail. It is integrated into the frame construction as a load-bearing element. It's fascinating to take in its installation position, offset 12° to the left around the longitudinal axis, together with its twin magneto ignition system. The angled mounting of the engine allowed the propshaft, rotating at crankshaft speed, to run past the driver's left side to the gearbox mounted transversely on the de-Dion rear axle. This drivetrain layout allowed the driver's seat to be positioned significantly lower, resulting in a very low overall build for the single-seater and consequent aerodynamic benefits. It's also worth taking a look at the oil tank housed at the rear of the car, which, together with its interposed oil coolers, keeps the engine's dry-sump lubrication continuously supplied with cooled oil. An elaborate worm-and-sector steering gear is another highlight on this voyage of discovery.
Rounding off the skeletal chassis is the authentically routed exhaust system with stainless steel pipes, along with the finely built spoked wheels featuring hand-laced and nippled stainless steel wire spokes.
