The 1935 racing season opened with the Monaco Grand Prix on 22 April 1935 in Monte Carlo. Mercedes had entered three cars, driven by Caracciola, von Brauchitsch and the Italian Luigi Fagioli. Serious rivals included well-known drivers such as Nuvolari, von Dreyfus and Chiron (all on Alfa Romeo). Maserati and Bugatti also fancied their chances of good placings. Auto Union did not enter the race at all.
After the start, Fagioli, in car no. 4, immediately took the lead of the field. As the race progressed, Luigi Fagioli was clearly dominant and crossed the line unchallenged as the commanding winner, half a lap ahead of the field. Mercedes-Benz had thus achieved the perfect start to the Grand Prix season.
