Er ist als tragendes Element in die Rahmenkonstruktion integriert. Interessant ist, seine 12\u00b0 um die L\u00e4ngsachse nach links versetzte Einbauposition mit seiner Doppel-Magnetz\u00fcndanlage auf sich einwirken zu lassen. Durch den Schr\u00e4geinbau des Motors konnte man die mir Kurbelwellendrehzahl rotierende Kardanwelle links am Piloten vorbei zum quer an der de-Dion Hinterachse eingebauten Getriebe f\u00fchren. Diese Antriebsstrang-Anordnung erlaubte eine deutliche Tieferlegung des Fahrersitzes und somit eine sehr niedrige Bauweise des Monopostos mit dadurch aerodynamischen Vorteilen. Ferner lohnt es sich den im Fahrzeugheck untergebrachten \u00d6lbeh\u00e4lter, der die Trockensumpfschmierung des Motors mit dazwischengeschalteten \u00d6lk\u00fchlern immer ausreichend mit r\u00fcckgek\u00fchltem \u00d6l versorgt, zu betrachten. Mai 1955, morgens um 7:04 Uhr verl\u00e4\u00dft der 300 SLR mit der Start-Nr. 704 (Startnummer = Startzeit) und sein Fahrer Hans Herrmann nebst Beifahrer Hermann Eger die Startrampe in Brescia, um die rund 1600 km lange Strecke der 22. Mille Miglia unter die R\u00e4der zu nehmen.Wegen einem abgesprungenen Tankdeckel mit \u00fcberschwappendem Treibstoff auf Fahrer und Beifahrer mu\u00dfte das Team in aussichtsreicher Spitzengruppe und nach mehr als der H\u00e4lfte der Strecke leider aufgeben.Der Ausgang des Rennens ist mittlerweile weltbekannt und ging in die Renngeschichte ein.
